Parks Canada Update

The names of places within the Torngat Mountains National Park will be up for discussion in Nain next week.

Judy Rowell is the Superintendent for Torngat Mountains National Park.

She says people from Nunavik and Nunatsiavut will be getting together for the discussion.

They’re hoping to agree upon common names for locations with two or more names.

Inuit in Nunavik have different names for the locations than Labrador Inuit.

The meetings are scheduled to begin on Monday.

  1. The places are in Nunatsiavut and should be called Nunatsiavut names. It's bad enough people from outside Nunatsiavut can vote on things, and take away monies and services, now we got to start naming Nunatsiavut places what people who don't even live here wants to name them. Where is Nunatsiavut sovereignty?

  2. Just to comment on the last comment, just to let you know that Inuit from both regions Nunatsiavut and Nunavik both traveled and used the Torngat Mountains as their homeland...so the Inuit from both regions have the right to discuss place names together
