Beneficiary Calling for NG Auditor General

A Nunatsiavut beneficiary is calling on the Nunatsiavut Government to create an independent Auditor General position.

Matthew Pike lives in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

He was an Ordinary Member candidate for Upper Lake Melville in the May election.

Pike is circulating a petition calling on the Nunatsiavut Government to create an independent Auditor General.

Pike says he believes the position should be created to address concerns that beneficiaries have over the financial state of the government.

The Nunatsiavut Government responded to Matthew Pikes call for an Auditor General in a press release on Friday.

Minister of Finance, Human Resources and Information Technology, Danny Pottle, says the Nunatsiavut Government has no plans to appoint an Auditor General.

He says given the size of the government, it is not necessary to have such a position.

Minister Pottle says they do have an independent external auditor in place.

He adds that “there are enough checks and balances in place to ensure that the

Nunatsiavut Government is transparent and accountable”.

  3. yes good idea maybe then we will find out what really happened to the 21 million dollars that went missing, and isn't it ironic that the deputy minister stepped down as soon as an independent auditor general was mentioned, keith wanted this also but very silent with his new position....

  4. I suggested the same thing when I got screwed over at LIDC. I hope Mr. Pike is successful with his efforts to have one put in place. There needs to be a whole lot more accountability, that's for sure!

  6. All of this is good to an extent, but the NG isn't a big enough government to need an independent Auditor General. To the other person who submitted as anonymous...we ALL know where the $27 Million went, into the stock markets. At the same time, ALL forms of government have money in the stock markets, whether it is regional, provincial, state or federal. It is just a way find another source of dollars. Yes we ALL know the outcome of a stock market, you either: go up, down or a standstill. For the NG's sake, it was unfortunate that the stock markets at that time went down. But what needs to be brought to attention, is that the stocks are now up and the NG is making money.

I think Matthew Pike is just sour that he didn't get voted into NG. But Goose Bay had their hopes on Max Blake and Keith Russell.

Now at the end of the day, if you are apart of the broad picture, it is easy to point fingers...just be thankful that you are not having to PAY for everything like Caucasians, or that you are not living in a 3rd world country.
